A Florida retirement community is at the center of a random sex-filled rumor involving cars and bathing supplies, but the rumor turned out to be nothing but an innocent reminder of aging as the Palm Beach Post reported.
The rumor started about the 76,000-resident retirement community in south Florida called The Villages and something called the “loofah code” — there was even a Reddit post about it that detailed each color. Apparently, residents in the community would go around placing different colored loofahs on their cars to let that person know they’re into swinging. The different colors denoted what that person would be comfortable doing. Its similar to a code that was used by the LGBT community starting in the 1970s called the handkerchief code. Different colored handkerchiefs would hang out the pockets of gay men to let other gay men know what they were into. But this going on in a retirement community is wild stuff. None of it seems to be true, however.
Apparently, everything started off of a rumor that The Villages had higher instances of STDs than Miami. This is something that Ryan Erisman, author of a book that entails life inside of The Villages, told The Post isn’t true.
“The Villages regularly leads the nation in number of new home sales. I think that if this luffa rumor were actually true they’d probably be selling a lot more,” he said.
The loofah rumor was apparently started by a local drag queen by the name of Tora. Tora made a TikTok that has since blown up and now some 6.3 million views later millions of people now think The Villages are a community full of swinging seniors. The truth about the loofas though is less interesting but totally understandable.
Brought to light by Erisman, who also happens to write the blog for The Villages called Inside The Bubble, he explained that the loofahs actually help people remember where they parked their cars.
Much like putting a colorful luggage tag on your black suitcase so that it stands out among all of the other black suitcases on the luggage conveyor,” he wrote. “It’s the same idea, if you’ve ever stepped outside of Publix on a sunny central Florida afternoon and tried to spot your white car among a sea of all the other white cars, and don’t quite remember which aisle you parked down.
Damn. It’s certainly a unique way to remember where you parked. But as our own Erin Marquis pointed out, if you need to do something like this just to remember where you parked your car, you probably shouldn’t be driving. If you’re like me though, I’d still like to believe that these things are used for some underground senior sex thing. There has to be more going on in The Villages than they want us to know about.
