Toddler reportedly dies after going to government-run childcare centre in Cairns

A two-year-old has reportedly died after going to a government-run childcare centre in Cairns.

The child, who suffered from a pre-existing condition, showed signs of illness when they arrived at the centre on Wednesday, the Cairns Post has reported.

The child was flown to a hospital in Brisbane, where they later died.

The Department of Education confirmed the child’s death in a statement to the Cairns Post.

“(We’re) aware of the tragic death of a child that attended a childcare centre in Cairns and would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family at this very sad time,” the department said.

Queensland Ambulance Services and Queensland Police told the newspaper they had no records of the incident.
