Sauvignon Blanc produced by South Australian winery Taylors Wines crowned best white wine in the country

A $25 bottle of wine produced in South Australia has been crowned the country’s best white wine at a prestigious award show in Germany.

Taylors Wines Jaraman Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2023 was crowed Best of Show Australia White at the Mundus Vini Grand International Wine Awards on Sunday in Dusseldorf.

The winery was also awarded Best Producer from Australia and won multiple gold medals for several of its wines, including its 2023 Riesling, 2023 Sauvignon Blanc and $19 One Giant Leap Shiraz 2021.

South Australia won big at the award show, with its wineries claiming 40 of Australia’s 41 grand gold and gold medals.

This included Kilikanoon Wines, which was awarded Best of Show Australia Red for its $96 Oracle Shiraz.

Managing director and winemaker for Taylors Wines Mitchell Taylor said he was “thrilled” the winery had been recognised on an international stage.

“International wine shows provide a valuable benchmarking opportunity for our wines against producers worldwide,” he said.

“Our winemakers strive to craft exceptional wines for people to enjoy with their friends and loved ones, and it’s amazing to see wines from across our portfolio recognised on the global stage.

“I’m so proud of the team and confident the future is bright for Australian wineries.”

Australia is the world’s fifth-largest exporter of wine.

Taylor said it was a trying time for the country’s wine industry due to tariffs introduced by China in 2021.

“On one end, our winemakers continue to be celebrated for their skill and outstanding wines, which is something to celebrate,” he said.

“On the other, we continue to feel the pressures of ongoing trade tariffs in China on top of some of the most challenging international market conditions in over a decade.

“We’re feeling very optimistic about the potential of China reopening to our wines, particularly as we know through these awards we can demonstrate that Australian wines are some of the best in the world.”

On Monday, Chinese Ambassador Xiao Qian said a review of the tariffs was progressing well.

A day earlier, Australia’s trade minister said China would complete its review into the years-long wine tariffs by the end of March.

Forty-five nations put forward their best wine at the international competition, with more than 250 wine experts from around the world coming together to crown the winners.

Italy came out on top, winning a total of 639 awards, followed by Spain (535), Portugal (352) and France (296).
