Independent Melbourne-based craft brewery Deeds Brewery to shut its doors

An independent craft brewery based in Melbourne has collapsed after failing to find a buyer or investor to keep it afloat.

Deeds Brewery announced on Wednesday that after 12 years of operation, it would be closing its doors.

The business went into voluntary administration on March 13 but struggled to find anyone to financially back the Glen Iris brewery.

“Since going into voluntary administration eight weeks ago, we have been searching for a buyer or investor, hoping to keep the spirit of Deeds Brewing alive, but unfortunately, this hasn’t come to fruition,” the company said.

“Our hearts are broken.”

“We’ll deeply miss our dedicated staff, who have become like family to us, and our incredible fans who’ve stood by us through thick and thin throughout the years. We want to thank you for all the love and support you have shown us.”

Deeds Brewery will continue supplying its wholesale customers as its inventory reduces, while other customers who have placed orders online will still have them fulfilled.

The company will also be discounting its online and taproom beers by 30 per cent as it winds down.

The announcement left customers in shock, with many saying they were “devastated” by the news.

“What a sad day for Australian brewing, and for the owners and staff,” one person said.

“I am having a Deeds beer right now, remembering all the great beer I have had over the years.”

Another said: “Y’all have crafted some of the nicest brews I’ve ever been fortunate enough to enjoy.”

“All the best team, for whatever the future brings.”

Deeds Brewery was founded by Patrick Ale and David Milstein who met at university in 2003 while they were studying engineering.

The pair established Quiet Deeds, which later became Deeds Brewing, in 2012.
