Four Spectators Killed After Rally Car Spins Off Track In Hungary

Four spectators were killed at a rally in Hungary this weekend after one of the cars crashed into a crowd. A Škoda Fabia rally car reportedly lost traction during the Esztergom-Nyerges Rally in Hungary, plowing into a crowd and killing four.

The crash occurred when a Škoda Fabia Rally2 car left the road during the fifth stage of the event in between the towns of Labatlan and Bajot, reports Dirt Fish. Four people died in the crash and a further eight people rushed to hospital. As Dirt Fish explains:

A statement from the MNASZ, the Hungarian motorsport federation, read: “On the second day of the 11th Esztergom-Nyerges Rally, on the Lábatlan – Bajna stage, the organizers of the race canceled the race due to an unfortunate accident.

“Eight ambulances and four rescue helicopters arrived at the scene to rescue spectators involved in the accident. Unfortunately, the lives of four people could not be saved. one child with life-threatening injuries, one person with serious injuries, and six people, including a child, with minor injuries were transported to hospital after being treated onsite. It is the responsibility of the authorities to clarify the circumstances.

“The management of the Hungarian National Motorsport Association (MNASZ) expresses its condolences to the relatives of family members.”

Sky News in the UK reports that the injured spectators taken to hospital included two children, one of whom was taken into care with “life-threatening injuries.”

The Hungarian motorsport federation says it is now investigating the crash alongside local authorities in the region. A statement issued by police in Hungary added:

“A fatal mass accident occurred between Lábatlan and Bajót in the early afternoon of March 24. According to information so far, a vehicle participating in a rally race drifted off the road for an unknown reason and drove into spectators.”

The cause for the sudden loss of traction from the car has not yet been identified.
