Woolworths under fire over unbelievable security camera discovery

A Woolworths shopper has raised questions after making an unbelievable find in the bakery section of their local store.

Sharing on Reddit, the customer posted a photo showing the extraordinary number of CCTV cameras in a small pocket of the Woolworths store.

The image shows rows of cameras suspended from long brackets coming down from the ceiling.

“Did Woolies spend all their profits on security cameras?” the shopper asked.

“I counted at least 10 camera just in this area. Woolies might have more pictures of me than my parents!”

It’s understood the number of CCTV cameras are no different to what is in place at any other Woolworths store.

However, given the high ceilings, which are believed to be in a new store, they may appear to look different to consumers from ground level.

Despite this, the photograph sparked a concerned response from Reddit users.

“Holy s***, I would have just walked out leaving everything where it was. Im not dealing with that shit,” said one.

“Like when the Coles gate didn’t open the other day. I just walked through it, setting the alarms off. Don’t accuse me of theft when Ive just paid for my s***.”

Another added: “Is it a casino or a supermarket?”

A third wrote: “It’s almost like their customers are struggling so much they’d steal bread. Can’t have that.”

One more responded: “I am OK with the cameras, but I am not ok with the employee standing behind me to make sure I am not stealing while I stand under the AI programmed overhead camera that doesn’t thinks I am stealing.”

Another said: “I don’t mind at all if the people watch me but I am not ok being watched logged recorded and analysed by 50 cameras.”

Others users took the opportunity to vent over issues they’ve had with Woolworths’ overhead cameras at self-serve checkouts.

In 2022, the retail giant announced that it was installing overhead cameras at the self-serve cash registers to help reduce scanning errors.

The security measure works by monitoring customers as they scan their groceries at self-serve checkouts, using camera vision and AI to detect when items aren’t scanned correctly.

However, many shoppers have voiced their frustration over the technology.

“I had it flag my handbag in the trolley as unscanned items, when the attendant came over she told me she’d also seen people’s babies and toddlers dinged as groceries,” said one.

Another said: “My son was in a red t-shirt and flagged as 20kg tomato. I decided to put him back on the shelf, i mean that’s a lot at $6.90/kg.”

A third wrote: “They asked the same question of my baby sitting in the trolley! I was less than polite to the poor staff member who insisted on me lifting her out to check I hadn’t hidden anything on of under the baby!”
