Australian parents are increasingly opting for old-fashioned baby names for boys and girls — with the likes of Margot and Vincent predicted to make a major comeback in 2024.
According to McCrindle’s top 100 baby names of the year, it seems parents of Generation Alpha — children born between 2010 and 2024 — are bringing back the classics.
As crowd favourites Oliver and Charlotte take the reigns as the top names for boys and girls, vintage monikers have appeared to surge in popularity over the past 12 months.

Vincent and Lennox have been on the rise for boys.
Popular culture has played a major part in shaping a generation so it’s unsurprising that a growing number of Gen Y parents are naming their newborn sons Connor after Succession character Connor Roy or UFC Fighter Conor McGregor.
For the girls, Nora and Adeline are moving up the list, with Australian-born Hollywood star Margot Robbie making her vintage name cool again.

Meanwhile, traditional names remain popular among Gen Alpha parents in NSW — with the likes of Oliver, William, Henry, Charlotte, and Olivia appear prominently on the top 10 list.
In Victoria, parents prefer short classic names for their boys and girls such as Jack, Leo, Isla, Mia, and Ava — while Theodore finally cracks the top 10 list, climbing all the way from the 33rd spot in 2018 to number eight.
Parents in Queensland are choosing old-fashioned names for their boys such as Oliver, William, and Henry. In the same way, they’ve given their daughters timeless monikers like Amelia, Charlotte, and Matilda.
South Australian parents prefer giving their children old-fashioned names — including Henry, Archie, William, Charlotte, Olivia and Matilda.
Tassie parents still appreciate the classics, commonly naming their kids Oliver, Henry, George, Charlotte, and Harper.
In Western Australia, most of the popular boys names are traditionally rooted in Christianity, including Noah, Thomas, Levi, and James.
Compared to the other states, parents in the ACT give their sons names typically associated with royalty and nobility such as Henry, Theodore, George, and Arthur. While the majority of baby girls have classic feminine names like Charlotte, Amelia and Olivia.
Interestingly, parents of Gen Alpha in the Northern Territory seem to opt for more unique names — including Xavier, Frankie, and Sadie.
