Tim Scott: America 'hungers' for better future with Donald Trump

(NewsNation) — As Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Nikki Haley make their final push in the New Hampshire primary, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott is showing his support for the former president.

“This nation hungers for some constant projection of a better future, and that trajectory happens with President Trump in office,” Scott told NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer in New Hampshire.

Meyer asked Scott if campaigning in New Hampshire was an audition to be Trump’s running mate. Scott declined the notion and maintained that he just loves the U.S. and wants to see Trump back in office.

Scott signaled Sunday he may be open to being Trump’s vice-presidential running mate. In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Scott said the only thing he wants is four more years with Trump so children can have a chance for a quality education.

“That’s what I really want,” Scott told Bash. “And if I can help achieve that through my endorsement by being on the campaign trail in my home state of South Carolina for the next four or five weeks, and then beyond, that’s the goal. If you don’t think about yourself, but think about the country first, we’ll be in good shape.”

Bash replied, “That wasn’t a no. That door is wide open. Fair read?”

“Well, Dana, you can, you can take it any way you want,” Scott responded. “My goal is to do one thing. It’s always going to do the same thing, make America and Americans believe in our future in the way that we do not today. Whatever that takes.”

Scott, who ended his bid for the GOP nomination in November, endorsed Trump on Friday. The endorsement out of South Carolina is a blow to Haley, who appointed Scott as a senator years ago.
