“The male driver and three passengers — two men and a woman — died at the scene,” police said.

Richmond Police District Inspector Mary Tanner said the crash occurred on a sweeping left-hand bend in the road, where the car appeared to have lost control and hit a tree before rolling.

Police are still working to formally identify the victims but said they are adults believed to be aged between mid-20s and 50s.

The victims are believed to have connections to the wider Richmond district but are not locals to Wardell, Tanner added.

Tanner said there was no indication the vehicle was stolen, and police were investigating whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.

“We haven’t ruled out any factors at this point in time,” she said.

Crash Investigation Unit police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Road closures have since been lifted.
