Thousands of Queenslanders charged vehicle registration fees twice in Transport and Main Roads blunder

Thousands of Queenslanders have been charged twice for vehicle registration fees due to a Transport and Main Roads (TMR) error — and many motorists may still not even be aware they have overpaid.

About 16,401 drivers were sent vehicle registration notices in July last year, but, in an error, they were then re-sent the same bill three months later.

Nearly 1000 people paid the second bill and required refunds estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

TMR said 95 per cent of customers were paid back by November, however the other 5 per cent paid via Australia Post and could not receive automatic refunds.

These people still remain out of pocket as of January.

Queensland’s Transport Minister Bart Mellish said the error was “unacceptable”.

“We expect TMR and the third-party providers to do better,” Mellish told 7NEWS.

An immediate review was launched and measures are now in place to prevent a repeat of the error, according to TMR.

This is not the first blunder for the transport department, after a design fault in September was blamed for 1800 drivers wrongly being handed double demerits points for seatbelt offences, some even having their licences suspended due to the error.

TMR says the system is now fixed and all traffic histories have been corrected.
