Team McDavid scores two late goals, wins in shootout over Team MacKinnon

David Pastrnak scored with 32 seconds left and then victimized Bruins teammate Jeremy Swayman again in the shootout as Team McDavid won the opening game 4-3 over Team MacKinnon on NHL All-Star weekend in Toronto.

Down 3-1, McDavid’s squad had pulled goalie Sergei Bobrovsky on Pastrnak’s goal and he was still on the bench when the Oilers captain tied the game with just seconds remaining.

That set up the shootout, which saw both Sidney Crosby and MacKinnon stopped by Bobrovsky, sealing the win.

The goalies are often an after-thought during the NHL All-Star Game, but all four of Team McDavid’s Bobrovsky and Connor Hellebuyck, as well as MacKinnon’s Swayman and Alexandar Georgiev stood tall amidst multiple breakaways and high-danger chances.

MacKinnon opened the scoring at 3:24 of the first period when he beat the Jets’ Hellebuyck on a breakaway, after taking a pass from Colorado Avalanche teammate Cale Makar.

Columbus forward Boone Jenner then tied things about three and a half minutes later when he finished off a pass from Montreal captain Nick Suzuki for Team McDavid.

Seattle’s Oliver Bjorkstrand broke the 1-1 deadlock at 5:51 of the second period when he managed to beat to give Team MacKinnon in the yellow jerseys the 2-1 lead. MacKinnon then added a second goal to make it 3-1, shaking off the check from McDavid to back-hand the puck over Bobrovsky.

That set up Pastrnak and McDavid for the late-game heroics.
