Shore School student dies from allergic reaction after end-of-season sport function

A Year 11 student at one of Sydney’s most elite all-boys schools has died following an end-of-season sporting function.

Leon Li – who was a keen golfer and a member of Shore School’s rowing team – is believed to have suffered an anaphylactic reaction while travelling home from the event at Zest Waterfront in Mosman on Wednesday.

Paramedics treated the 16-year-old in a carpark at Neutral Bay about 10pm before he was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital, but could not be revived.

The school’s headmaster Dr John Collier wrote to parents on Thursday to confirm the news, writing that it occurred: “to the best of our knowledge, as a result of an anaphylactic reaction to food on Wednesday night.”

Anthony McAllister from Roseville Golf Club – of which Leon was a member – said the club was in “shock”.

“He came along as one of those exceptional young characters, that had a bit more gift than the others around him,” he said.

“The club is hurting very bad, Roseville Golf Club was his second home. He’ll be sadly missed.”

NSW Police will investigate what he ate and where but say there are no suspicious circumstances.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
