Red Sox star Devers calls out front office: ‘Everybody knows what we need’

Boston Red Sox star Rafael Devers called out the club’s management on Tuesday for not doing more to upgrade the roster this off-season.

The two-time All-Star third baseman expressed his dissatisfaction while meeting with reporters.

“Everybody knows what we need. You know what we need and they know what we need. There’s just some things I can’t say out loud,” Devers said through a translator. “But everybody that knows the organization and knows the game knows what we need.”

Per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Devers added: “They need to make an adjustment to help us players be in a better position to win. Everybody in this organization wants to win. We, as players, want to win. I think they need to make adjustments to help us win.”

Devers is the second Red Sox player in the past week to offer this kind of sentiment.

Closer Kenley Jansen told the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast that he’s frustrated with the lack of big moves.

The biggest change Boston made in the off-season was replacing baseball boss Chaim Bloom with Craig Breslow following back-to-back last-place finishes in the American League East.

The team signed injured reliever Liam Hendriks earlier this week. But he’s only the third significant free-agent signing for the team along with starter Lucas Giolito and reliever Cooper Criswell. Boston also acquired Canadian outfielder Tyler O’Neill in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reported the Red Sox are projecting to have their lowest payroll since 2014.
