Qantas has announced a new Frequent Flyer program starting next month.

The new scheme, which will offer more seats that can be redeemed with points, comes after months of criticism from customers over a lack of reward seat availability.

“I’m hearing it will be more seats — they will be more expensive than the classic rewards, but cheaper than the points and pay,” Steve Hui from online flights site, Points Guy, said.

Qantas said there are currently 5 million seats you can book using points across its partner airlines, while Virgin said points for seats are available on 80 per cent of its flights.

Mum-of-two Olivia White used points to take her family to Japan, Singapore and Perth.

“It’s really about being on the ball and going in and checking,” she told 7NEWS.

“Rewards seats are actually released all the time, in the last year I would have saved tens of thousands of dollars.”

Flight experts have said travellers no longer need to book a year ahead to find good seats using points — with some released just weeks in advance, but they do warn customers will need to be flexible.
