Buckingham Palace revealed on Tuesday morning (AEDT) the king had been diagnosed with a form of cancer during his recent corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate.

William will be returning to royal duties without his wife by his side, as Catherine, Princess of Wales recovers from her recent surgery.

Last month it was revealed that Princess Kate underwent abdominal surgery, announced hours before King Charles shared that he was set to have an operation for an enlarged prostate.

It was during this operation that his cancer was discovered — however, it is understood the cancer is not in his prostate.

Kate is currently recovering at home, and is believed to be out of action until Easter.

With two senior royals out, pressure is on William to continue with the family’s duties.

Kensington Palace announced on February 6 that William would be returning to duties after he took some leave to help his wife recover.

On Wednesday William will conduct an investiture at Windsor Castle and will host a gala for the London Air Ambulance that night.

William is said to be in regular contact with his father, who returned to London from Sandringham to commence his cancer treatment.

Buckingham Palace announced the health news in a statement.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the statement read.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

“He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

It is believed that William’s younger brother Prince Harry will be making the trip back to the UK to visit his sick father in the coming days, according to The Press Association.

“The duke did speak with his father about his diagnosis. He will be travelling to the UK to see His Majesty in the coming days,” a source close to Harry said.

His last public appearance with his father was at Charles’ coronation in May 2023.
