It sounds like the latest instalment in Australian author Aaron Blabey’s beloved children’s book series, Pig the Pug.
This time it’s Poppy the pug, and like Pig, she has a problem with excess.
“She was given a lot of love … in the form of treats (from her previous owners),” Caroline Esera from Animal Welfare League Queensland said.

Poppy, who tips the scales at a staggering 23.5kg, double a healthy weight, needs a new home.
She is up for adoption by Animal Welfare League Queensland from its Gold Coast shelter, after she was surrendered to the facility.
But those who take Poppy in have been asked to whip the pudgy pet into shape.
“Poppy is on a mission to shed some pounds and live her best life,” the organisation has written on its website.
“This sweet girl is looking for a loving family who will be committed to her weight loss regime and be happy to bring her to and from the shelter for her weigh-ins.”
“Poppy will need ongoing rehabilitation, so we need someone who can be mindful of her diet and exercise regime … so she can lose that weight she needs to lose,” Esera told 7NEWS.
The proposed exercise regime involves “short and sweet” walks, so as not to “over-exert” her.
In return, Poppy will provide all her “enthusiasm”.
There will be cuddles aplenty when she is “soaking up all the love you have to give” as she “enjoys chilling out by your side”, according to the shelter.
Poppy is available for adoption for $99.
