Parts of M8 and M4 motorways in Sydney closed for over an hour due to smoke in tunnel

Parts of two major roads in Sydney were closed for over an hour following a small fire in a motorway tunnel.

Fire and Rescue NSW were made aware of the fire inside a tunnel on the M4 and M8 at 10.30am on Tuesday.

It told 7NEWS.com.au the fire occurred in an electrical substation in the tunnel, impacting the tunnel’s electrical infrastructure.

The fire has been extinguished, and the site has been deemed safe.

Due to the remaining smoke in the tunnel, parts of the M4 and M8 were closed however they have now reopened.

The Iron Cove Link was also closed in both directions between the Anzac Bridge and Iron Cove Bridge however it has also reopened.

“Traffic conditions are returning to normal,” Transport for NSW said.
