Melbourne speedboat competitor Nate Mullan in race against time as fiery crash destroys vessel

A Melbourne teen has walked away from a fiery speedboat crash just seconds before his racing vessel exploded.

Nate Mullan was in the final lap of an Australian V8 Superboat Series race at Griffith at the weekend and was travelling at about 100km/h when he lost control.

“I thought it was time to shine on that lap. I did so well on that lap, it was the last corner and I got a bit of glare in my vision and I just turned a little bit too early,” he said.

Upside down, Mullan and his navigator were forced to flee and it wasn’t long before the boat began to burn.

The smash has ruined their chances of a national championship and raised major questions about the sport’s safety.

“At the end of the day the boat can be replaced, the boys can’t be,” Mullan’s father Phonsy Mullan said.

“That’s the biggest thing and to see my son there was not good.”

Event organisers say there were fire extinguishers at all safety bunkers around the track, and the first was used within 20 seconds.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with the costs of a replacement boat and the boys are offering sponsorship deals to any businesses willing to donate.

But they’re running out of time because the next meet is fewer than four weeks away.
