McDonald’s Australia confirms major backflip on controversial menu change to Sprite drinks

McDonald’s Australia has confirmed a major backflip on a controversial menu change after facing significant backlash from customers.

In October 2022, the fast food giant announced that it was dumping Sprite from all Macca’s restaurants around the country and replacing it with Sprite No Sugar.

The move attracted an intense wave of criticism from McDonald’s fans, who were outraged to have the popular soft drink removed from the menu.

Now, a McDonald’s Australia spokesperson has confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au that it had reversed that decision and that Sprite would be coming back to Macca’s in the coming months.

“At McDonald’s, we are committed to providing great tasting, great value food and drinks our customers know and love,” the spokesperson said.

“We regularly review and evolve our menu to meet changing consumer tastes and preferences.

“In response to customer feedback, McDonald’s will be transitioning from Sprite Zero Sugar to Sprite across restaurants nationwide from April to June.

“Coca-Cola Zero Sugar and Frozen Coke Zero Sugar will continue to be available for customers looking for low- to no-sugar alternatives.”

The decision to dump Sprite from menus across Australia 18 months ago prompted widespread outrage from fans, including popular food reviewer and TikTok star Russ Eats who revealed the controversy in a video at the time.

Many voiced their unhappiness over the move in a series of angry comments.

“NOOO. McDonald’s Sprite was the best drink,” one said.

“They removed the best drink,” another wrote.

“MACCAS SPRITE WAS HEAVEN AND THEY WENT AND MADE IT HELL,” a third said.

“What’s everyone gonna do to fix their hangover now? We need the little sugar rush,” another pointed out.
