Despite claims that he was sober, Matthew Perry was still very much abusing drugs in the months leading up to his death, sources tell the Daily Mail.

After detailing his long road to sobriety after a decades-long battle with drug and alcohol addiction in his 2022 memoir, the Friends star was found dead at age 54 in October after overdosing on ketamine.

But even though he resided with live-in help, Perry used “hook-ups” to deliver him illicit drugs in his home.

“He would meet girls on dating apps and have them come over. There was a slew of 21 to 25-year-olds that he would meet on Raya. They would bring drugs with them. It was mostly Oxycontin [a powerful opioid pain killer]. He would also get illicit drugs from old girlfriends, there was a kind of network,” a source tells the outlet.

“He would hang out with them and then it would be: ‘Can you bring me something?’ He could persuade people that it would not be doing anything wrong. The belief is that he would tell the girls he needed the drugs to treat his pain. In the end he would burn them out and move on to the next one.”

The insider alleged that these visitors wouldn’t be searched upon entering Perry’s home.

“When nurses or companions are in someone’s home, they do not have the same permissions as in a [rehab] institution. They cannot frisk visitors for drugs.”

A source went on to tell the publication that Perry lived a reclusive lifestyle because he didn’t want his loved ones to “witness his struggles.”

“Matthew was never able to maintain any type of long term sobriety so everything that you have read in [his memoir] is wrong — he was not sober and was not able to maintain it,” they said.

“He would have bouts of getting it together and being okay, but then they would be followed by moments of weakness and of using. He had demons. He tortured himself.”

His memoir, they added, was simply wish fulfillment.

“He was writing about what he was hoping to be the situation as if he was already there. He was writing the script that he wanted,” the source continued.

Perry was reportedly “receiving ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety,” according to USA Today.

Additional details, obtained by Page Six, revealed that a female friend said Perry was “angry and mean” in the weeks leading up to his death because he had been taking shots of testosterone.

But another person close to Perry quoted in a police incident report said the actor had been “in good spirits” recently.

This echoed a sentiment expressed by model and journalist Athenna Crosby, who was photographed with Perry on a lunch date at the Hotel Bel-Air just before he died.

“I want to emphasize that Matthew was in extremely good spirits and talked to me enthusiastically about the things he had coming up in his life,” Crosby wrote in an Instagram post. “He was so happy and vibrant.”

Perry’s Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston also said he “was happy” in the days leading up to his shocking death.

In addition to ketamine, the autopsy further revealed Perry had other substances in his system, including buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid addiction and manage pain, weight loss drugs, antidiabetic medication and nicotine lollipops.

But the amount of ketamine found in Perry’s blood “would be enough to make him lose consciousness and lose his posture and his ability to keep himself above the water,” said Dr. Andrew Stolbach, a medical toxicologist with Johns Hopkins Medicine who reviewed the autopsy report on behalf of the Associated Press.

Further evidence collected throughout Perry’s home painted a picture of a man who relied heavily on both over-the-counter and prescription medication.

“In the assistant’s bedroom, there were multiple open, empty, half-filled medication bottles prescribed to the decedent, as well as over-the-counter medications, vitamins, digestive aids and dishes filled with multiple various loose pills, tablets, caplets, candy and breath mints,” the report read.

In a harrowing interview published this week, Perry’s ex-girlfriend Kayti Edwards detailed an instance when the actor glued his hands to his knees in a desperate bid to stop taking more drugs.

“He had been getting high all night on a plethora of drugs, most likely crack cocaine and other substances,” she recalled in an interview with the UK Sun. “I found Matthew on the couch with his hands superglued to his legs — it was desperately sad. I had to use nail polish remover and olive oil to free him.”

The outcome, Edwards added, was a horrific experience for her former boyfriend.

“We were literally ripping the hair from his legs and he had red, raw patches left behind, it was pretty horrific,” she told the outlet.

But before the results of his autopsy were made public earlier this month, Edwards, who is the step-granddaughter of Julie Andrews, predicted in November that he probably slipped back into drug use.

“I know Matthew and I know that he wouldn’t have just drowned,” she told the UK Sun. “I think he might have taken pills in the week leading up to this.”
