Man suffers serious head injuries in brutal assault by armed men in Colyton

A man has suffered serious head injuries when he and his friends were allegedly attacked by a group of men, in what a senior Sydney police officer has described as “one of the worst categories of assault” he has seen in years.

The 20-year-old and his three friends were attacked by several armed men while walking along Carpenter St, Colyton overnight.

Emergency services were called about 11.15pm Saturday and arrived to find the 20-year-old with serious head injuries.

He was treated by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital, where he remained in a serious but stable condition on Sunday.

The man’s three friends were also assaulted and are receiving hospital treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Detective Inspector Steve Peroni said the brutal assault likely involved edged or blunt-force weapons, or both.

“The level of violence used was extreme,” he said on Sunday, adding that the assault was “in one of the worst categories of assault that I’ve seen in a long time”.

Police are working to determine who the armed attackers were and how many were involved.

At this stage, investigators are unclear whether they fled the scene in a vehicle or on foot but do not believe there is any threat to the public.

“I can assure the results of Colyton, there is no further danger as far as police are aware,” Peroni said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Nepean Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
