Man dead, woman fighting for life after rescue on Stockton Beach, NSW

A man has died and a woman is fighting for life after being pulled unresponsive from the water during a group rescue in the NSW Hunter Region.

Emergency services were called to Stockton Beach, about 3km south of Birubi Beach in Anna Bay, Port Stephens about 2.40pm Wednesday after four people were pulled from the water.

Bystanders rushed to help a 33-year-old man; however, he could not be revived and died at the scene.

Paramedics treated a woman and a second man before they were both taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical and stable condition respectively.

A third man was also treated at the scene but did not require any further medical assistance.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and will prepare a report for the coroner.
