The woman was treated by paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

It is believed the man and woman are known to each other.

A 45-year-old man attended Dee Why Police Station on Thursday morning, where he was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station.

One witness, who was in the gym car park at the time, told 7NEWS she saw a man on top of the woman who was screaming.

“It was not like a normal scream,“ she said, adding that a second man stepped in to stop the attack before the alleged offender fled.

“After attacking and stabbing the victim, the offending male got into a vehicle and left,” South Sydney Police Area Command Superintendent Rod Hart said on Wednesday.

The woman then ran, bleeding, up the stairs to the gym to seek help, another witness told 7NEWS.

Investigations are ongoing.

The man has not yet been charged.
