Man accused of sex assault, extortion, impersonating a police officer

A 22-year-old man is accused of sexually assaulting and extorting someone while claiming to be a police officer in North York last month.

Toronto Police say officers responded to a sexual assault call in the area of Keele St. and St. Regis Cr. – south of Finch Ave. W. – on Feb. 23.

The alleged victim was in a commercial building and was stopped by a man who works as a loss prevention officer but identified himself as a police officer, cops claim.

The man allegedly photographed the person’s government identification and then demanded money.

Police allege the man also sexually assaulted the person before they managed to get away.

A suspect was subsequently identified and arrested.

Md Mahi Sharia, of Toronto, is now charged with personating a peace officer, extortion and sexual assault.

Investigators are concerned about the possibility of other alleged victims, so they have released a photo of the accused.
