Man, 44, charged with fraud after alleged Facebook Marketplace scam

A 44-year-old man is charged with fraud after an alleged cash switcheroo during a Facebook Marketplace transaction.

Toronto Police notified the public about the incident on Thursday after the accused allegedly used the alias “Danny” on the social media site to message the victim about buying items that were for sale.

The accused, wearing a surgical mask, allegedly met the victim at a pre-determined location and handed them an envelope with cash in it in exchange for the items.

“During the interaction with the victim, the accused (allegedly) switched the envelope containing the cash payment with another containing only paper,” Const. Sinderela Chung said. “He then left the area before the victim realized the payment envelope contained no money.” 

She said investigators believe there may be more victims. 

Florian Dinca, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with fraud over $5,000.
