Magnitude 4.7 earthquake rocks New Zealand

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake has rocked New Zealand.

The quake originated in Wellington’s Upper Hutt about 5.18am, with a depth of 23km.

More than 11,000 people have reported feeling the quake on GeoNet.

The earthquake was felt as far north as Auckland and as far south as Christchurch.

“Not the word of a lie, this … quake just scared the c*** out of me,” one Upper Hutt resident told the NZ Herald.

“I’ve literally sat bolt right up in bed.

“The noise, the sound, the length, the rattle … the worst one yet for me.

“Felt like a train drove right under the house and just now the aftershocks feel like the house is vibrating.”

Two more smaller quakes have been reported in the area since.

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 29km was felt at 5.23am, and a third 3.0 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 27km was felt about 6.05am.

The second quake has 5524 felt reports on GeoNet, while the third has 502.
