Lottery winner embroiled in feud with boyfriend: ‘He thought I was much richer than I am’

A woman who secretly won the lottery 15 years ago has been embroiled in a bitter feud with her boyfriend — who claims she “deceived” him by giving the impression she was “much richer” than she actually was.

The couple, who have been dating for a year-and-a-half, began living together after the boyfriend was unexpectedly evicted from his rental home.

Things took a turn for the worse when the pair began talking about how she managed to buy her own property — outright.

“We were discussing finances as we wanted to be on the same page… and the topic of how I own my place came up,” the 35-year-old woman said in a Reddit thread.

“I explained I won some money — not a lot but enough to be able to put myself through nursing school, purchase my place outright and have some savings — back in 2009.”

She said she was able to purchase the property for “real cheap” due to the global financial crisis at the time.

“Obviously I had some luck on my side as this was right in the middle of the recession,” she says, adding that she used the home as an investment property for nine years before moving into it in late 2018.

However, her boyfriend didn’t take the news well.

He accused her of “deceiving” him by not telling him how she became financially stable.

“He says I deceived him by giving him the impression that I was financially well off, and that I led him to believe I was more business savvy then I was,” she says.

“He was led to believe I was much richer than I am. He assumed I was loaded. So me telling him I actually got lucky p***ed him off.”

In addition to her lottery winnings, the woman said she had “decent savings” from years of working as a nurse.

“I make decent money, fully own my home, fully own my car, have decent retirement plans and decent savings — I’m fairly certain that I am financially better off than most people I know,” she said.

“But he says that he can’t trust me anymore and that he was ‘stupid to have listened’ to my financial advice.

“But the thing is I never gave him any financial advice, except for telling him not to buy a car that was — in my opinion — unreliable and too expensive.”

After things cooled down between them, he asked her how much she had in savings.

“He seemed impressed with how much I had and then said maybe he reacted too aggressively,” she said.

“Then he told me that he still wants the car I advised him not to get… My jaw dropped when he hinted at me getting a Tesla for him as a birthday present since it’s his birthday in early March.

“He was never like this before, I guess moving in made it difficult to hide his crazy.”

‘I’m dumping him’

Furious with his suggestion, she now plans on ending their relationship after seeing his true colours.

“I am definitely dumping him,” she said.

“He’s jealous and also resentful… He’s now ranting about how he would have tripled the money if he had won it.

“He’s saying that my money is wasted on me because I don’t ‘make it make money’. Apparently I should’ve been investing my savings in high yielding stocks and other s***.

“FYI, I do get financial advice from a financial advisor I trust but I am a risk averse person so I would never invest it in the manner this idiot is telling me.

“Sure the chance to get a lot of money is there but so is the chance to lose.”

‘Genuinely deluded’

She said she “couldn’t believe” her boyfriend’s behaviour since he found out about her lottery winnings.

“He thinks he’s so clever but I am thoroughly disgusted. Oh it is absolutely over between us,” she said.

“He’s now telling me that, with just a quarter of my money, he can show me how to invest on the stock market and ‘make real money’. Oh he is genuinely deluded.”

Her post has been met with more than 1,900 comments, with many urging her to “run” from the “gold-digging mooch”.

“Run, Forrest, run! Seriously, he was so blinded with rage that you… checks notes… had money that he just started yelling incoherently at you. You need a quick and safe exit, boyfriend sounds unhinged,” one said.

Another suggested: “Insecure, jealous and he has now shown his true colours. Get him out of your house before you become de facto. Then he can claim half.”

One added: “Of course he believes you deceived him because what he thought of as a cushy retirement is looking not so luxurious as he’ll have only your nurse’s salary to mooch off on.”

‘Boot the moochers’

Meanwhile, one shared a heartbreaking story of how her colleague lost half her assets after her husband sponged off her.

“I worked with a woman whose husband lost his job, stayed home, never got another one, never helped out. She worked full days and went home to cook and clean,” she said.

“The year she was going to retire he filed for divorce. Requested 50 per cent of the assets (and got it) which he didn’t contribute a cent to, 50 per cent of her retirement funds and alimony, because he was entitled to live in the manner that he was accustomed.

“I assume he filed for it in the year she was going to retire because she would leave the house at 7.30am and get back at 6pm and he would spend all the time at the pub or out with mates fishing or whatever and now she would be home all day cramping his style.

“And the courts awarded it. She didn’t retire because she couldn’t afford to anymore.”

One responded to the story, saying: “This is why you have to boot the moochers out as soon as you realise what they’re doing. Let it go on because you’re comfortable or in a rut… and it will burn you down the road.”
