Leafs’ Matthews joins Panthers’ Barkov, Hurricanes’ Staal as Selke finalists

Toronto Maple leafs centre Auston Matthews joined Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers and Jordan Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes as the finalists for the 2023-24 Frank J. Selke Trophy, the NHL announced Sunday.

Matthews, who has already taken the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the league’s top goal-scorer during the regular season and is also a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for his “sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct,” is a first-time finalist for the Selke.

Barkov, 28, has previously won the award, given “to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game,” back in 2021. He was also a finalist in 2022.

The 33-year-old Staal was a finalist in 2010, when he was with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
