Kyle Sandilands reveals family member was stabbed by Joel Cauchi during Westfield Bondi Junction attack

Kyle Sandilands became emotional as he described how a family member was attacked by killer Joel Cauchi, during his terrifying frenzy at Westfield Bondi Junction on Saturday.

The KIIS FM star revealed on The Kyle & Jackie O show on Monday morning that his wife’s relative Yvonne Wineberg was one of the first women targeted during the attack.

Speaking to co-host Jackie “O” Henderson and newsreader Brooklyn Ross, Sandilands said: “One of the first women to get stabbed in the shoulder was a family member of ours.

“So, we were watching it on TV, and saw one of our families (sic) were involved and carted off to hospital.”

Sandilands said a Bondi lifeguard was trapped in Myer during the incident and saw the woman lying on the ground.

The department store had pulled down the shutters to keep shoppers safe, however Sandilands said the unnamed lifeguard asked to be let out so he could offer assistance.

“He could see our family member that got stabbed laying on the ground. There was so much blood.

“He said, ‘if I don’t get to her, she’s losing too much blood’, so they let him out, and he rendered assistance before the paramedics arrived.”

Wineberg was released from hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Sandilands went on to explain the scene, saying the lifeguard said he could see an injured person every 50-foot.

“He said every 50 foot there was another person laying in a pile of blood — all the way down the mall,” Sandilands said of the horrific scenes.

NSW Police identified Cauchi as the killer on Sunday.

Cauchi, 40, was fatally shot by a police officer at the shopping centre on Saturday night, minutes after he fatally stabbed six people and injured 12 others.

He had only recently moved to Sydney from Queensland. He is understood to have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had undergone treatment for mental health issues over many years.

Cauchi had been in contact with police over the past five years in relation to mental health issues but had never been arrested in Queensland for any criminal offence.

His last interaction with police was in December on the Gold Coast, where he was spoken to by officers on the street.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters on Saturday night that Cauchi was seen entering the shopping centre, before leaving and then returning about 3.20pm.

He drew a knife from his backpack and began stabbing shoppers and families.

Scott happened to be nearby and responded, fatally shooting the offender after being directed to level five by members of the public.

She is being praised for her “enormous courage and bravery”.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said Scott was doing well under difficult circumstances.

“She showed enormous courage and bravery,” Webb said.

“It was an awful situation … but it could have been much worse.”
