King Frederik praises ‘happy base’ of marriage to Queen Mary amid affair rumours

King Frederik has praised the “happy base” of his 19-year marriage to his wife, the newly crowned Queen Mary, in a new biography.

The comment comes after unsubstantiated allegations that he cheated with Mexican model Genoveva Casanova, which surfaced after photos were published in Spanish publication Lecturas.

Casanova, 47, has “flatly denied” the “malicious” rumours; Frederick and Mary have not commented but the Danish royal family said it does “not comment on rumours or insinuations”.

The new Danish king took part in interviews for the book, The King’s World, which was released days after he and Mary acceded to the throne on Sunday.

The couple became the Danish monarchs after Frederick’s mother Queen Margrethe, 83, announced her abdication after 52 years on the throne.

“I love marriage, my wife, our children and the whole happy base that arises for the people who manage to stay together and persevere,” Fredrik said in the biography, written in collaboration with Jens Anderson.

He also spoke of his time as the Crown Prince and the ups and downs of being heir to the throne and sometimes wanting “to be like all other boys of my age”.

“I remember my 18th birthday as something similar to the end of the world,” he said.

“It was the feeling that now everything that was fun and exciting was coming to an end.

“Fortunately, it didn’t.”

Frederik and Mary, who was initially unaware he was Danish royalty, famously met at Sydney bar The Slip Inn during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Mary was 28 and working as a marketing executive when she began chatting to Frederik, then 32.
