Kevin Malligan’s life support to be switched off after Sydney father critically hurt in Bali scooter crash

A Sydney father critically injured in a scooter crash in Bali has been declared clinically brain dead by doctors, with his heavily pregnant wife now left to decide when the 24-year-old’s life support will be switched off.

Kevin Malligan suffered a brain bleed and fractures to his skull and neck when the moped he was a passenger on hit a pot-hole, launching him onto the road.

He was placed on life support in the BIMC Hospital in Nusa Dua following surgery to stop the bleeding and release the pressure on his brain.

His wife Leah Malligan, who is due to give birth next month, raced to Bali to be by her husband’s side before hundreds of generous donors helped secure him a medevac flight home to NSW last week.

Now, despite the best efforts of doctors, family have revealed they will have to say their final goodbyes and Malligan will never get to meet his second child.

“This has been a distressing experience for all of us,” Malligan’s mother-in-law Jodie French said.

“Leah would like to thank everyone from the bottom of her heart who has donated, helped, sent messages to help her and the family at this time.”

“She and the Malligan family now has the awful decision of when to turn off his life support.”

The Sydney father’s story triggered an outpouring of generous donations, with $120,000 raised through a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical costs and to fly him home to Australia.

“Leah is so grateful for the financial support to get Kevin home and being able to spend quality time to say goodbye,” French said.
