‘I’m a food expert – these 4 simple spices could boost your brain power’

As we get older it is normal to feel a little bit like your brain isn’t as sharp as it once was. While extreme cases of this can be a sign of dementia, it might just be one of the side effects of ageing.

However, this is not necessarily inevitable or unavoidable. One scientific study, from 2022, showed that our cognitive speed remains fairly high until the age of 60.

Either way, there are steps we can take to try to keep our brains as healthy as possible. Diet is one such way with many health bodies recommending eating a healthy, balanced diet full of healthy fats to do so.

However, what is perhaps less known is the fact that certain spices could aid with cognitive health.

Food expert and founder of Seasoned Pioneers, Matt Webster, revealed four spices that could help with this.

Ginger

According to Matt, not only does ginger help to improve digestive health, but it’s also a “powerful” spice when it comes to brain health.

He said: “Ginger contains hundreds of phytochemicals, which all protect against oxidative stress.

“Oxidative stress can accelerate the ageing process and is thought to be one of the key drivers of Alzheimer’s disease.”

So, next time you’re making a curry, stew or stir fry, why not add some ginger? It also goes well in sweet dishes, such as puddings, cakes and biscuits too.

Turmeric

Turmeric is another powerful spice loaded with plenty of nutrients. Matt said: “Its main compound, curcumin, contains neuroprotective properties which help protect the brain’s sharpness.”

“It helps to boost memory function, reduce brain fog and improve cognition. Curcumin has been found to increase levels of the growth hormone BDNF, which is decreased in people with Alzheimer’s.

“Add some turmeric into a curry, stew or rice dish – it also goes well in smoothies and teas too.”

Cinnamon

This classic spice is loaded with antioxidants that prevent the build up of protein in the brain which is linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, Matt said.

He continued: “Not only does it encourage the process of learning and forming new memories, helping neurons to form and make new connections, but the spice is also high in antioxidants which protect the brain from the negative effects of stress.”

You can sprinkle cinnamon into coffee, mix into morning oats or enjoy a sweet cinnamon bun.

Black pepper

Probably one of the most common spices in the world, black pepper is also an excellent spice for brain health.

He added: “The main medicinal compound in black pepper is piperine and it contains high amounts of antioxidants.

“These antioxidants prevent any damage to healthy brain cells. Black pepper also improves cognitive function and memory by stimulating chemical pathways to the brain.”
