House Republicans seek to rename Dulles Airport after Trump

(NewsNation) — A group of House Republicans have proposed a measure to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after former President Donald Trump.

The bill, led by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa., and five other Republican co-sponsors, was introduced to rename the airport to “Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The airport is located in northern Virginia about 25 miles west of central Washington, D.C.

Lawmakers touted Trump’s economic record, Supreme Court justice appointments and his handling of the border while in office.

“As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing ‘welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil,” Reschenthaler said in a statement.

Across the country, eight airports are named after former presidents, including John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Dickinson-Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport in North Dakota.

Democrats have voiced opposition to the legislation.

“Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges. If Republicans want to name something after him, I’d suggest they find a federal prison,” Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly, whose district partially includes Dulles, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Even if the measure passes in the House, it likely won’t survive once it reaches the Senate.

Dulles Airport is currently named after John Foster Dulles, a former secretary of state who served under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The airport remains one of the busiest airports in the U.S., serving around 60,000 flyers on average every day.
