A police chase in Miami, Florida earlier this month ended with a woman deciding to jump from an off-ramp into a lake. Dashcam footage released by the Florida Highway Patrol this week shows how the latter stages of the pursuit unfolded and how the driver managed to climb from the wrecked vehicle and leap from the road deck.
The police allege that 27-year-old Melina Logan visited a South Miami Honda dealership to test drive a 2024 Civic. She allegedly waited for the salesperson to step out of the car and sped off, according to WTVJ. Law enforcement spotted the car on the Palmetto Expressway later that day and started a pursuit.
Dashcam footage shows the Civic weaving through traffic at high speed before resorting to blasting down the hard shoulder once congestion got too heavy. The FHP cruiser was going just fast enough to keep up, even bashing the side of a pickup truck while squeezing past another cop car.
The chase came to its damp conclusion once the Civic crashed into several vehicles while going down an off-ramp. Officers can be seen rushing the car with guns drawn. The woman behind the wheel climbed out of the passenger-side window with her hands raised. Instead of stepping down off the concrete wall and surrendering, she jumped into the water.
Officers offer her rescue ropes to pull her to shore. She refused, so officers went into the water and dragged her out. Logan faces four charges, including aggravated fleeing and eluding as well as resisting an officer without violence. I get it. If you’re desperate to escape, you’ll do anything to get away. It’s why it’s so dangerous for police to engage in car pursuits.
