Health expert warns why you should never sleep with a fan on

A health expert has shared a warning on why people should never sleep with a fan on – as it could end up causing more harm than good.

According to the expert, leaving an electric fan on overnight could leave you waking up with various health problems.

While electric fans can help keep us cool in the bedroom, they may also lead to muscle pains, a dry throat, breathing difficulties, muscle aches, congestion, and irritation.

Sleep expert Martin Seeley, who is the CEO MattressNextDay, is calling for people to switch their electric fans off before bed. He warns one issue you could face includes triggering allergens and asthma.

He explains that an electric fan circulates the air around a room – which can also include dust mites, spores, pollen, and other allergens.

He said: “So, if you find that you are suffering from excessive sneezing, watery eyes, a runny nose, itchy throats and even breathing difficulties make sure that there is no dust on the blades of your electric fan.”

Martin also said that being in the same room as an electric fan that has been left on for hours can make you congested. Over time he said the excessive wind can dry out your nose and throat.

This, naturally, causes your body to produce more mucus to stay hydrated and create many side effects.

He added: “Including a headache, stuffy nose and even a sinus headache.”

Drinking plenty of water can help combat this though. He said: “This is also recommended for those that have suffered from a poor night’s sleep due to the heat, as even mild dehydration can cause you to feel even more drowsy and tired.”

Leaving a fan on all night could cause dry eyes and irritation too. Consider using a rotating electric heater for better air circulation.

A fourth health risk is the possibility of causing a stiff neck or sore muscles.

He explained: “If you have any pre-existing muscle pains, perhaps from working out or from improper posture whilst working at a desk, you should refrain from directing the electric fan on this area throughout the night.

“This is because the concentrated cool air can make your muscles tense and cramp up, causing you even more pain. You may even notice that you’ve gained a stiff neck since using an electric fan so refrain from using it for a few nights to see if you spot a difference.”
