The 30-year-old, reportedly disheartened by the backlash, had seriously considered this decision, but was persuaded otherwise by the support of friends and family, according to a Pakistan media report.
Rauf also demanded for a break. Seeking some respite, he expressed his desire to sit out of the three Test series in Australia. However, coach Mickey Arthur had different plans, urging Rauf to play due to the conducive bouncy pitches and his ability to generate pace.
He had previously expressed these concerns to former chief coach Mickey Arthur during the 50-overs World Cup in India. Rauf had informed Arthur that his body would not be able to handle such a demanding workload. Despite Arthur’s efforts to persuade him to play the Tests in Australia, Rauf consistently declined, citing his limited experience in first-class cricket and fears of potential injuries.
Having taken a break, Rauf returned to the field in the Big Bash League, representing the Melbourne Stars. Initially going wicketless in two matches, he then showcased his prowess with 3/38 against Sydney Sixers and 3/24 against Hobart Hurricanes. Carrying this confidence into the New Zealand T20Is, Rauf had a commendable performance, claiming five wickets. Nevertheless, he also faced challenges, notably bleeding 60 runs in four overs, with Finn Allen scoring 27 runs off a single over in Dunedin.
