‘Hard Knocks’ invades New York for second year in a row but with a twist

The New York Jets were featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” in 2023. This year, it’s the Giants’ turn, but with a twist.

As Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team noted, it was a busy offseason for Big Blue.

In addition to the departure of star running back Saquon Barkley, the trade for two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Burns and the selection of wideout Malik Nabers in the first round of the NFL Draft, there were many other headlines for the Giants in the offseason.

In January, it was reported that New York’s former defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale “stormed out” of a meeting with head coach Brian Daboll after the team fired a host of assistant coaches, including outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and his brother, defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins. Martindale and the Wilkins brothers worked together on John Harbaugh’s staff with the Baltimore Ravens and are reportedly “close.”

Martindale and the Giants eventually mutually agreed to part ways on Jan. 10.

Meanwhile, New York tight end Darren Waller has been toying with retirement for much of the spring but still hasn’t informed the team of his final decision.

The Giants brought on one-time Pro Bowl wideout Allen Robinson for depth in the wide receiver room and replaced Barkley with former Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans running back Devin Singletary.

Quarterback Daniel Jones continues to work his way back from his torn ACL which he suffered in Week 9 last season. The G-Men also added former second-round pick Drew Lock in March via a one-year, $5M contract to serve as Jones’ backup.

“Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants” takes place ahead of the team’s 100th season.
