Girl spotted in basket of bike while she and woman riding without helmets on the Gold Coast

A woman has risked hundreds of dollars in fines, riding a bicycle with a young girl in the front basket on the Gold Coast – with neither wearing a helmet.

Footage shows the girl in her school uniform sitting in the basket while the woman pedaled the electric bike in Surfers Paradise on Wednesday morning.

The pair was seen travelling on a footpath along Via Roma about 8am.

Queensland road rules stipulate riding a bicycle with a passenger “not in a seat designed for a passenger” will attract a $154 fine.

The same fine would be issued to any bike rider or passenger not wearing a helmet.

The state transport department has been contacted for comment.
