Fans ‘devastated’ as Rebel Wilson memoir pulled from sale in Australia

Excerpts from Rebel Wilson’s memoir Rebel Rising have been dropping online for weeks — but good luck trying to get your hands on a copy of the actual book, which was set to go on sale on Wednesday.

In Australia, the much-anticipated book has been delayed, with fans taking to social media to say their pre-orders had been cancelled and the book not available to buy online.

Some customers were surprised to receive refunds on their pre-orders, with no update on if or when the book would become available.

The book’s Australian publisher, Harper Collins AU, confirmed that the memoir’s publication had been pushed back.

“Publication of Rebel Rising has been delayed, but we have no further comment,” the publisher told Yahoo Lifestyle on Wednesday.

The book is not available for purchase on the Harper Collins Australia website and there is no information about when it will be.

On Amazon Australia, Rebel Rising is listed as “currently unavailable,” with the note, “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.”

Other Australian book websites such as Angus and Robertson, Dymocks, Booktopia and QBD had either removed a link to the book or listed it as unavailable for sale.

On Wednesday, Dymocks’ website came up with a 404 error message that stated: “We can’t seem to find the page you were looking for.”

Typing “Rebel Rising” into Booktopia’s online search engine results in 11 listings — none of which are Wilson’s book.

Posting from the US (local time) on Tuesday, Wilson shared a photo of herself clutching two copies of the book.

“REBEL RISING IS OUT today!” the post was captioned.

“Grab a copy at your local Barnes and Noble.”

But as Australian fans tried to buy the book on Wednesday without success, they began dropping comments on Wilson’s Instagram post.

“We can’t get them in Australia,” one fan complained.

“You went on talk TV to promote the book, said it would be out on April 2nd, it’s now April 3rd here in Australia and not a single retailer is selling it. Please explain,” begged another.

“I pre-ordered a copy from Big W and recently received a refund and notification that they were no longer stocking the book,” wrote a third.

“Devastated!”

One fan said the same thing had happened to them.

“I’m in Australia and I can’t get a copy,” the fan said.

“Just went to my local book store and they said it has been recalled to be possibly re-printed and have parts redacted!”

According to a Dymocks store in Perth, the book has been delayed “for legal reasons”.

Speculation is mounting that the delay may have something to do with passages in Wilson’s book relating to her experiences of working with Sacha Baron Cohen, whom she describes as an “a******”.

The pair starred together in the 2016 film The Brothers Grimsby.

Wilson outed the British comedian on Instagram last week, after telling fans a celebrity was attempting to shut down her no-holds-barred book.

“I will not be bullied or silenced by high-priced lawyers or PR crisis managers,” Wilson wrote on Instagram.

“The a****** I am talking about in ONE CHAPTER of my book is: Sacha Baron Cohen.”

In an extract published by People, Wilson said she was “scared” of working with him.

“It felt like every time I’d speak to SBC, he’d mention that he wanted me to go naked in a future scene,” Wilson claimed.

“I was like, ‘Ha, I don’t do nudity, Sacha’.”

Baron Cohen then allegedly summoned her to “film an additional scene” for the movie.

The Bridesmaids star said no and “compromised” by slapping him on the bottom and improvising a handful of lines so she could “get out of there”.

Baron Cohen, via a spokesperson, denied all allegations to CNN.

“While we appreciate the importance of speaking out, these demonstrably false claims are directly contradicted by extensive detailed evidence, including contemporaneous documents, film footage, and eyewitness accounts from those present before, during and after the production of The Brothers Grimsby,” the spokesperson said.

In a 2016 interview with UK Marie Claire, Wilson spoke about Baron Cohen wanting her to film a nude scene.

“You want to know that the people (behind the camera) have a certain sensibility and decency,” Wilson said at the time.

“And a lot of times in comedy, they’re not those people.”

Rebel Rising still appears to be available for purchase on the Barnes and Noble website in the US.

It also appears to be available on some UK-based book websites such as WH Smith and Blackwells, but not Waterstones or Wordery.
