Dozens of new NSW Ambulance vehicles sitting dormant despite high demand

A fleet of new ambulances ready to be rolled out across NSW is instead sitting dormant, 7NEWS can reveal.

Politicians had promised to open dozens of new stations. However, two years down the track, only one site has been locked in.

The 70 new ambulances are parked in yards at Parramatta and Fairfield, with some awaiting final fits, while others are being rolled out.

But the “expected completion date” on the vehicles has been left blank.

Many are bound for planned new stations, such as Cherrybrook which was supposed to open last year.

However, a site still has not been chosen.

A 7NEWS investigation uncovered 30 stations were promised in 2022, many of which were planned for the growing west and southwest such as Glenmore Park, Doonside, Prairiewood, Prestons, Raby, Narellan and Dundas.

However, for almost all, suitable locations have not been found.

The only site purchased so far was in North Sydney.

Health Services Union secretary Gerard Hayes said: “The state-of-the-art equipment needs to be operational and on the road now.”

NSW Ambulance director Peter Elliott said the agency was in partnership with suppliers across the state to “deliver the vehicles as soon as possible”.

“Unfortunately, we’re also in competition in the property market, and you know what the Sydney property market is like,” he told 7NEWS.

7NEWS understands the demand for ambulance services is so high, old stations at Parramatta and Lane Cove that were decommissioned will be reopened by the end of the year.

A new Sydney super-station at Glebe will be officially opened after Easter, but it is already up and running.
