Cowboys expected to make this player highest-paid in NFL

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is thriving this season and expected to cash in 2024.

Prescott is in the third year of a four-year, $160M contract, which includes an out in 2024 ($61.9M in the dead cap). During a Thursday episode of “Speak on FS1,” Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reported both parties “are highly motivated” to get an extension done this offseason. He added that the two-time Pro Bowler should earn “between $55M and $60M,” making him the highest-paid player in the league.

Through 15 games, Prescott leads the league in passing TDs (30), is third in QBR (71.5) and fifth in passing yards (3,892). As of Thursday, FanDuel gives him the seventh-best MVP odds (+2000). The Cowboys (10-5) have already clinched a playoff spot thanks to his excellent play.

However, Cowboy fans having reservations about giving Prescott a massive deal is understandable. His regular-season success has yet to translate to the postseason. In seven seasons, the 30-year-old is 2-4 in the playoffs.

Dallas isn’t in a position to hand out massive contracts, either. Spotrac estimates it will be $13.77M over the cap in 2024. Stars such as wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge-rusher Micah Parsons are also in line for extensions.

However, franchise QBs are hard to find, so organizations tend to show them the money when they’re playing at a high level.

If Prescott keeps flourishing, he could lead Dallas on a deep playoff run, convincing the Cowboys to reward him with a new deal. They must find a way to create more cap room, but they can restructure contracts and move on from other players to accomplish this.
