Coles shopper’s hack to ‘mute’ the self-serve checkout voice sends social media wild

A savvy Coles customer has sent social media into a spin by revealing a little-known hack for silencing the self-serve checkout voice on registers.

Sharing on Reddit, the eagle-eyed shopper explained that anyone can mute the “condescending” voice by simply tapping one button.

The Reddit user shared the tip during a broad discussion on anti-theft measures at Coles and Woolworths.

“That voice coming from the computer is a nag. I mute it immediately,” they wrote.

The comment immediately piqued the interest of some, keen to know how it’s done.

“Wait, you can mute it? How do you perform this miracle?” one responded.

Another said: “You can do that? I’ve never looked to see if that’s an option.”

The shopper went on to say that many Coles self-serve registers have a volume button.

“There is a speaker-like button at the bottom of the screen,” the explained. “I tap it.

“I happened to notice it, and I tried.”

‘Man I hate that voice!’

Speaking of the self-serve checkout voice, they added: “It does have a certain condescending ‘tone’ to it.”

Many were excited by the simple tip.

“What a great tip, thanks so much. Man I hate that voice!” one responded.

Another added: “No f***ing way, thank you.”

One more said they already knew of the hack, saying “’Ma’am, lower your tone!’ I say, every time, as I lower the volume to zero.”
