There is a long history of YouTubers chasing clout by taking their expensive cars to CarMax and getting lowball offers from the dealership chain. In a recent video from the guy you might recognize as the dude who sold his Tesla Model S because the tires were bald, he takes a brand new Foundation Series Cybertruck in for an appraisal. The vlogger in question isn’t actually going to sell the truck—it isn’t his to sell in the first place—because Tesla will allegedly fine Cybertruck resellers $50,000 if they flip their truck to a new buyer within the first year. He was ultimately quite disappointed with the $76,000 offer he got from CarMax.
“Can you believe that? They can sell it for $150,000 to $200,000 so fast, and they will give me $76,000. That is madness. It is crazy,” says the WHAT’S INSIDE? FAMILY host.
Going into the appraisal, the YouTuber thought CarMax would offer a number over the original $100,000-ish price the buyer paid for the truck. Obviously, as the truck has only been on the market for a couple of months, there aren’t any comps for the CarMax buyers to apply to this potential purchase. None of these have gone through the wholesale auction process, changed hands publicly, or even been traded in at dealers. There’s no data here, and the employee isn’t going to risk an above-MSRP offer in the current used car market. The fact of the matter is, they have no hard data to verify what they could resell this truck for, so they aim low and hope for the best.
The Cyberbeast is Tesla’s most expensive Cybertruck model, featuring an advertised 320 miles of range (though that’s proving to be an exaggerated number in real world testing), will run from 0-60 in 2.6 seconds, and can tow up to 11,000 pounds.
