Boos rain down after Jimmy Webster spoil concusses Fremantle opponent Michael Frederick

St Kilda veteran Jimmy Webster has copped boos from Fremantle fans after a big hit forced Michael Frederick out of the game early on Saturday night.

Webster leapt to spoil Frederick just minutes into the Marvel Stadium clash and it led to the Saints kicking the first goal of the contest.

But it left Frederick worse for wear, substituted out with concussion despite appearing to avoid the double blow of having his head hit the turf.

Webster only recently returned from suspension for a heavy bump on North Melbourne’s Jy Simpkin in a pre-season game.

This time, however, he may not be penalised for the brutal collision even though he missed the Sherrin.

“We know some of the issues with a decent suspension but that is just contesting the ball,” goalkicking legend Jason Dunstall said in commentary.

“I don’t think there’s much more Jimmy Webster could’ve done.”

Collingwood great Nathan Buckley said it is “the difficulty in our game” that there will always be unavoidable incidents.

Dunstall said players appeared to understand there was no malice intended.

“There was no remonstrating with Webster. They knew it was a fair contest,” he said.

“It’s great to see (Frederick) jog off and let’s hope he’s ok.

“(Webster) didn’t tuck the arm in, it wasn’t a bump. The arm was raised to spoil, attacking the football.”

Frederick was cheered off the field but Dockers fans had the opposite reaction for Webster following St Kilda’s goal.

“It just had to be him, didn’t it?” Buckley said.

“And he came out of it sore as well. There’s boos coming over the fence but I don’t know whether he can be criticised in any way for that.”

Commentator Dwayne Russell noted the crowd was “still a little stunned” as play resumed.

Frederick was ruled out 15 minutes after the initial incident, with Tom Emmett replacing him.
