Body found in search for missing cruise ship passenger overboard from P&O Pacific Adventure

A body has been found in the search for a missing cruise ship passenger reported overboard in waters off Sydney.

A search and rescue operation was launched about 10 nautical miles (18.5km) off Sydney Heads after a person overboard alarm was raised on P&O’s Pacific Adventure cruise ship about 4am Monday.

The ship, carrying more than 2600 guests, was due to dock in Sydney Harbour at 6am but instead the crew spent Monday morning searching the area.

Police said rough conditions made search efforts difficult, with crews facing swells up to 5m and 50 to 60km/h winds.

About 10.30am, the body of a man was located in the water and retrieved, police confirmed.

The Pacific Adventure has been cleared by police to return to port, a P&O spokesperson said.

“We thank guests for their care, understanding and patience on what’s been a distressing day for guests and crew,” they said.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the guest at this difficult time.”

NSW Police Marine Area Command led the search as multiple helicopters and tug boats scoured the air and water for the missing man.

Police were using infrared technology to search for the man’s heat signature in cold waters.

Passengers on board the ship described the atmosphere as “tense” and “very sombre” as search efforts unfolded.

7NEWS.com.au understands the ship was hosting an Elvis-themed voyage.

The ship’s next voyage, a four-night cruise to Queensland due to depart White Bay on Monday afternoon, has been delayed till later in the evening.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
