1. Loose-fitting matching sets

Top of Nicole’s list for autumn is a loose-fitting matching set.

“Matching sets have been on everyone’s radar for a while now, and this season, that trend is continued with loose-fitting matching sets with a longer sleeve,” Nicole said.

“The best hat will always be a wide brim hat or a bucket hat.”

She recommends outfits from Roame at The Iconic (Ryder Shirt; $300; Bari Pants; $290) as well as Kivari (Kaylee Shirt; $249 and Kaylee Pants; $249) to get you started.

If you want to add a bucket hat, the Seafolly Ahoy Bucket Hat ($69.95) is Nicole’s top pick.

2. Longer-length skirts

Personally, I’ve been loving longer-length skirts for a while now, so I am delighted we’re going to be seeing more of them this autumn.

“The midi and maxi skirts are the length of the season for workwear and more elevated outings,” Nicole said.

“Stripes are another huge trend for autumn/winter, whether that’s a stripe knit or a stripe rugby top.

“Usually stripes are reserved for summer’s favourite nautical trends, like yacht girl summer, but this season we are seeing it come through in more autumnal shapes.”

Nicole’s picks are Cos’s Rugby Style Polo Shirt ($79), as well as By Johnny’s Denim Maxi Skirt ($250) and the Atmos and Here Lina Column Maxi Skirt ($89.99).

3. Over-sized shirts with Jorts

The movement for over-sized is going nowhere.

But this season it gets its update with ‘jorts’ — which are basically shorts that hit between the lower half of the thigh and just past the knee.

“Try teaming jorts like these Blanca Shorts ($280) with a long-sleeved over-sized shirt for weekend outings,” Nicole suggested.

She likes the Blanca Fern Shirt ($250) and also suggests pairing with wide-leg pants like these $215 pants from Cos.

4. Maxi dresses

“The maxi dress is the perfect casual option for the weekend,” Nicole said.

“As the weather gets cooler you can opt for a long sleeve version but for now layering with a lightweight shirt or jacket will help keep the look sun safe as well as stylish.

“You could also try belting a dress to create a different silhouette.”

Her picks this autumn include the Frankie Dress by Aston Studio ($380) as well as the AERE Organic Cotton Tank Midi Dress ($150).

5. The one and done outfit

If you’re sick of thinking about what to wear on any given day and just want things to be simple, you need to consider the “one and done outfit”.

“The one and done outfit is a staple, whether that’s a long-sleeve dress or a jumpsuit,” Nicole said.

“With an unusually hot Autumn forecast, breathable, lightweight materials that also protect your skin from the sun will be your best friend.”

Nicole loves the Sofie Sundress by Alemais ($695) or The Fated’s Relude Jumpsuit ($150).

She recommends pairing such an outfit with “chunky framed sunglasses with wider arms”.

“This season it’s all about rectangular or cat-eye frames,” she said, recommending Quay’s No Apologies style ($125).

6. The suit set

A suit set has always been stylish, particularly if it’s relaxed in fit and on-trend in colour.

Nicole is obsessed with the Dazie Relaxed Fit Tailored Pants ($79.99) and the Relaxed Fit Blazer ($109.99).

“The suit set is the ideal workwear look, absolutely fashionable right now but also offers a high level of protection for that morning commute,” she said.

7. Layering

Last but not least, layering is king for autumn/winter — and it’s all about how you layer.

“Experiment with different textures or draping and layers,” Nicole said.

“Asymmetrical hemlines and draping can add interest to your outfit and are perfect for dressing in unpredictable weather.”

She likes the Ownley Cassidy Asymmetric Top ($89) layered over the top of the Atmos and Here Organic Cotton Ribbed Top ($39.99).
