An Australian tourist has died in Bali in a hit-and-run scooter crash.

The 33-year-old was left for dead following a collision on the Persinggahan Hwy in Klungkung, in Bali’s southeast, about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

The traveller was riding a Honda Scoopy scooter along Persinggahan Hwy when a speeding bike, coming in the opposite direction, crashed into him, Klungkung Police said, according to local media.

The road had been quiet at the time of the crash, a witness said, and locals rushed to the Australian man in a desperate bid to help him.

“Because they were busy helping the injured person, the perpetrator was not identified and had already fled to the east,” Widiono said.

Authorities said the search for the other rider is ongoing.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Bali.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.
