Aussie rock band AC/DC reportedly ‘loses founding member’ ahead of rumoured tour

Aussie rock legends AC/DC may be preparing for another tour — but without a key long-time member.

No performances have been announced but music industry rumours suggest the band may be going on the road, including a possible gig in the German city of Munich in June.

If the speculation is true, long-time bass player Cliff Williams may be absent from the line-up.

AC/DC superfan Dean Delray, a comedian who has previously interviewed Williams, said he heard from a “very reliable source” that Williams would be stepping back from any potential tour involvement.

Taking to his Instagram, which is largely dedicated to the band, Delray shared the news with his 71,000 followers.

He posted a snippet of an interview he had done with Williams in 2020, about whether the now-74-year-old would continue performing with the group.

In the Instagram caption, Delray said: “Ok last night I heard from a very reliable source that AC/DC will be touring with a new bass player this year.

“I’m not gonna say who it is. I’ll let AC/DC make that announcement.”

He then added that, three years ago when he spoke with Williams, the musician told him “straight up” that “he would not be touring again”.

“I was surprised that the fans didn’t seem to pick up on that,” Delray said of the interview.

“I just want take this time to thank Cliff for absolutely rocking us on the bass for over 40 years. An absolute killer of groove. I love you brother 👑👑.”

Williams said in the 2020 podcast that, in earlier tours, he would commit to only a few shows rather than an entire tour “for (the sake of) my health”.

“We all have our issues down the line,” he said adding that it was “both” mental and physical health.

“I definitely have some physical issues which I won’t bore you with. It’s tough.

“I’m very grateful for everything, it’s been fantastic.

“(But) I was at a point — and this is at the beginning of the (2015-16) ‘Rock Or Bust’ tour — that I just felt, for me, it was time to hang it up.”

“I knew that I didn’t wanna keep doing these two-year tours, and I didn’t wanna hold them back, so I made them aware of the fact that this was gonna be my last go-round.”

Williams joined the band in 1977 and has already quit once, in 2016.

Speculation of an upcoming tour comes more than a month after original AC/DC drummer Colin Burgess died at 77.

His death on December 16, 2023, was from unknown causes.

The band said at the time: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess. He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”
