Aussie cricket sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk opens up on friendship with David Warner

Australian cricket sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk has shed light on his relationship with veteran opener David Warner after missing out on selection for the T20 World Cup squad.

Fraser-McGurk was controversially overlooked in the provisional 15-man squad despite a string of stunning performances in the Indian Premier League.

The 22-year-old has blasted scores of 12, 84, 23, 65, 20 and 55 in his six games for the Delhi Capitals with an absurd strike rate of 233.33.

His impressive form has kept Warner out of the Capitals side, with coach Ricky Ponting opting to stick with Fraser-McGurk at the top of the order.

But Australian selectors went with Warner for next month’s T20 World Cup in what will be the 37-year-old’s final farewell for the national side.

Fraser-McGurk said the decision “didn’t bother me a hell of a lot” and added that he has learnt plenty of Warner.

The young Aussie recently spent time with Warner and Delhi teammate Tristan Stubbs in Dubai.

“Davey is driving around in the Ferrari as per usual so it was good to get a ride in that,” he told Adam Peacock on Willow Walk Cricket Podcast.

“Stubbsy didn’t get a go … it was just me and Davey having a joy ride. I love that sort of stuff.”

Fraser-McGurk added that he has been living the high life with Warner in India.

“(Warner) has probably one of the biggest networks you’ll ever see. Knows everyone apparently, everyone knows him here (in India), he’s got a lot of mates who are quite high up in special places,” he said.

“We’ve had some fun playing golf with some of the pros here in India, and going to massive mansions having dinners and stuff like that.

“It’s a completely different lifestyle over here than sitting in South Australia living next to the airport and the house is shaking every time a plane goes over it, which is what I had.

“It’s been an unbelievable experience with (Warner) so far. I can’t complain about anything he’s done, he’s helped me so much over here already.”

Fraser-McGurk was realistic about his future chances with Australia and said the communication with him has “been really good”.

“There’s two ways you can look at it. You can look at it through, ‘This is what I’ve done to prove my case,’ and then there’s also, ‘Look, a month and a half ago I wasn’t even in the picture’,” he said.

“They (selectors) probably had a good idea of what it was a month and a half ago trying to build that, how they can get the connection in that team.

“And it’s also hard to fit in. You’ve got David Warner, our best opener ever in three formats. You’ve got Travis Head, who’s lighting it up over here and has lit up for the past 18 months. And then Mitch Marsh is the same and he’s also the captain.

“I can’t really see myself batting five or six because we’re pretty set there with Timmy David, Cam Green, those sort of blokes.

“So that’s the way I think about it. There’s hopefully going to be more time for that.

“And if I do somehow get a travelling reserve (spot) then great, I can get good experience there.

“It didn’t really bother me a hell of a lot because I wasn’t in a position to sort of … feel like I’ve earned that yet. World Cup cricket is a lot different to IPL and franchise cricket.”
