Ausgrid provides update as power outage plunges Sydney CBD into darkness

More than a thousand Sydneysiders in the CBD were left without power on Friday due to an outage amid heavy rainfall and flash-flooding.

A substation on Goulburn and Pitt Sts in the CBD flooded on Friday morning, causing extensive power outages in the area.

The outage started about 3.50am on Friday, Ausgrid said, with about 1300 people impacted.

By early Friday afternoon, power was restored to the majority of customers in the CBD.

Ausgrid crews spent hours on site at the flooded substation, working to “pump the water out”.

NSW Premier Chris Minns has warned it is “very important” for NSW residents to listen to updates amid severe weather warnings, especially those who live in an at-risk community.

“It’s vitally important that you don’t take unnecessary risks, particularly driving through floodwaters,” he said.

The SES has carried out six rescues in the last few days, with that number also expected to climb.

Those in at-risk communities are also urged to download the Hazards Near Me app for updates.
